Replacing a failed transformer
Send the nameplate and the date the site needs power back. The replacement is matched to the existing installation first, and every supply option is stated with its condition and delivery basis.
Start with
- Nameplate photograph
- the whole plate, legiblerating, voltages, vector group, impedance
- Photographs of the unit
- front, sides and cable connectionsthey show the fittings and the connections
- Date power is needed
- the latest acceptable dateit decides which options are worth checking
- Stock
- none is heldavailability is checked per request
Daverlan holds no stock and runs no emergency crew. What it can do quickly is turn a nameplate into a specification a manufacturer can quote, check which supply routes fit the date, and say plainly when none of them does.
What the replacement has to match
| Item | Why it matters | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Rating and voltage pair | A different ratio will not work on the existing network and installation | The nameplate |
| Vector group | It must suit the earthing arrangement and any unit in parallel | The nameplate |
| Impedance | Units in parallel share load in proportion to it, and it sets the fault level at the board | The nameplate or the test report |
| Tapping range | The network voltage at the connection point has to be reachable | The nameplate |
| Footprint, cable boxes and bushing positions | A unit that does not fit the plinth or the cables adds site work | Photographs and the site drawing |
| Construction and liquid | The room, the containment and the fire strategy were built for it | The nameplate and the site |
What happens after the nameplate arrives
Read and check
The plate is read into a specification, and anything illegible or missing is asked for in the first reply.
Match the installation
The items in the table above are confirmed, so an offer is only made for a unit that fits.
Check the routes
Manufacturers whose published range covers the specification are asked, including whether a unit to that specification can be built or supplied by the date given.
Set out the options
Each option is stated with its condition, its documents, its delivery basis and its validity, side by side.
Supply options, and what each one needs
| Option | When it is considered | What has to be on file |
|---|---|---|
| New, built to the specification | Always | Datasheet, drawing, routine test report on delivery |
| New, from a manufacturer's short delivery range | Where a manufacturer publishes such units and one matches | The same documents, and the match confirmed item by item |
| Surplus, unused | Only when you accept it | Documents, storage history and a test before dispatch |
| Refurbished | Only when you accept it | The work done, the parts replaced and the test results |
No option is assumed to exist. Whether any unit is available by the date given is established per request and stated in writing.
What we need to quote a replacement
| 01 | Nameplate photograph, and photographs of the unit and its connections |
| 02 | The latest date the site can accept, and whether a temporary supply exists |
| 03 | Indoor or outdoor, ambient temperature, altitude and any corrosive or dusty exposure |
| 04 | The standard and the loss requirement the destination market applies |
| 05 | Quantity, destination and the date the equipment has to be on site |
| 06 | Whether surplus or refurbished units are acceptable, or new only |
Common questions
How long does it take to replace a transformer?
It depends on whether a matching unit exists, on the manufacturer's loading if one has to be built, and on the site work. No general figure is published here. Each option in a quotation carries its own delivery basis.
Can you send a unit today?
No. No stock is held. What can be done quickly is the specification and the check of which routes fit the date.
Do you install or commission the replacement?
No. Removal, installation, testing and commissioning belong to a qualified contractor, and the connection to the network operator where it applies.
