Buying a substation as a station rather than as parts moves the integration risk to the manufacturer. A prefabricated station is type tested with its equipment inside it, so the internal arc behaviour and the temperature rise are proven for the assembly rather than inferred from its components.
The choice between the types below is mostly about the site and the operating practice. A compact station keeps the footprint small and is operated from outside. A walk in station has an internal aisle. A package substation close couples the equipment on a common base without a building around it.
