Fiber connectivity
MPO to LC breakout cables
An MPO to LC breakout cable fans one MPO connector out to LC duplex legs, for connecting parallel optics to duplex ports, configured to the fiber count, polarity and leg length.
A breakout joins a parallel port, a 40G or 100G SR4 transceiver for example, to duplex ports, or splits a trunk at the rack. Eight fibers give four LC duplex legs, twelve give six and twenty four give twelve.
The legs must be shorter than the assembly, and multimode breakouts keep a flat MPO end face; the configurator refuses anything else.
A breakout that stays inside the rack is equipment wiring. One that leaves it through a fire separating wall to reach the next room is a service through that wall, and Approved Document B in England asks for every such opening to be fire stopped and kept as small as practicable.
An SR4 transceiver on an MPO-12 lights only eight of the twelve positions: 1 to 4 transmit, 9 to 12 receive and 5 to 8 stay dark. A breakout for that port therefore carries eight fibers to four LC duplex legs, each leg pairing one transmit fiber with one receive fiber.
