Switchgear is specified from the network it connects to. The rated voltage, the short time withstand current and the internal arc classification all follow from the connection point. An assembly that suits one site can be unusable at the next.
Have the fault level and the network operator's requirements in hand before you ask for prices. Where they are still open, the quotation names the values it assumes, so you can check them before you order.

Insulating gas and the EU F gas rules

Regulation (EU) 2024/573, Article 13(9). The date applies to putting into operation, whenever the switchgear was made, so it covers unused surplus units too. Switchgear taken out of operation at one Union site and put into operation at another does not count as putting into operation (Article 13(10)). Derogations tied to the outcome of a procurement procedure are set out in Article 13(11) and 13(12).
SF6 in Great Britain and Northern Ireland
The dates above are EU law, and they bind Northern Ireland, where Regulation (EU) 2024/573 applies directly. Great Britain has no ban on SF6 in new switchgear: its assimilated F gas regulation bans SF6 only in magnesium die casting and vehicle tyres, and the Defra consultation that closed in December 2025 proposed nothing on it. The government's industrial strategy says only that it will explore phasing SF6 out of network switchgear.
GB still regulates the gas in service. Most medium voltage switchgear holds less than 5 kg of SF6 and needs no leak checks, which start above 6 kg, but anyone who handles the gas needs an F gas certificate. In the EU, from 1 January 2035 SF6 may be used to service switchgear only when it is reclaimed or recycled.

An internal arc classification covers the configuration that was type tested. Ask for the report that matches the arrangement offered.
What every switchgear request needs
- Rated voltage and the system voltage it will operate on
- Rated normal current of the busbar and of each feeder
- Rated short time withstand current and duration, taken from the fault level at the connection point
- The panel schedule: incomers, feeders, couplers, metering and any spare ways
- Insulation medium preference, and any restriction on it at the destination
- Internal arc classification required, and the room the assembly will stand in
- Protection scheme, relay preference and any network operator requirement
- Quantity, destination, required delivery date and acceptable condition
